Got a big one here for you; hope you all enjoy the reading! Here
is a
few updates first:
1) Daniel has been working off and on, on the new album. It is
not yet
finished but may be out sometime next summer (assuming he doesn't
work
on any more films or production work). One of the hold ups is
he is currently shopping for a label since being released from
Warner.
2) The word from above on the unknow French song played on the
sessions show is as follows: called "Por Ton Sorir"
which means
something like "For Your Smile". For the full set
played, see the last Digest.
3) The track "Deep Blue Day" someone was looking for
appears on the
Trainspotting soundtrack in addition to an older soundtrack
Daniel was
involved in with Brian Eno called Apollo.
4) I got someone to help out with the web page; a formal
introduction will
happen soon. Thanks to those of you who offered to help.
Without further adieu...here is Digest #87...

I was not lucky enough to catch the show on tv (my local PBS
station
didn't seem to run it), but listening to the sound clips on the
«session
at West 54th» page, I understood «...pour ton sourire, je veux
te donner
une belle bague, belle bague pour ton sourire... Pour ton
embrasse, je
veux te donner une tasse d'amour, tasse d'amour pour ton
embrasse...
Pour tes yeux, pour ta ??? ... pour ton sourire...»
Thanks for everything!

The French song Daniel played is "Pour ton sourire",
"for your smile".
The "Sessions" setting (viewed on TV, anyway) seemed a
bit sterile for
the song. I enjoyed it much more when he played at the Coach
House
a couple of years ago (!)

The uncensored issue of Wynona without the American Edition
intrusion is
readily available from any mail order company in the UK or
Europe, or probably
anywhere except North America for that matter. I suggest you
simply try
ordering it from one of them if you're desperate for a copy.
A company I've used in the past is Spin CDs at
http://www.pfoot.demon.co.uk/spin/spin2.htm who are very helpful
& reliable.

Just a brief to note to let those people with
programatically-challenged
PBS stations know that there's still hope. Here in Detroit, the
Lanois/Harris segment of "Sessions" is not being aired
until Sept. 20, and
I suspect that similar scheduling changes have occurred at other
stations.
Many local PBS channels have their URLs posted on PBS' site
(http://www.pbs.org)--check there first before panicking. Good
luck!
(By the way, you've done a beautiful job with this newsletter,
Kenley.
Thanks for taking the time and energy to update it every week).

HI. I have been reading the newsletter for several months. I
really
enjoy all the inside poop, and stories and stuff. I have been
trying to
locate a copy of "Cool Water", and can't find it
anywhere in the Central
PA. or Baltimore area. Really would like to score a copy for
personal
use.
I know the guy who wrote "Deeper Well" very well (no
pun?!!?!).
He is David Olney, a great folk singer songwriter from the north
east,
living in Gnashville the past twenty odd years. As a matter of a
fact,
I have toured with him as guitar and mandolin player twice over
the
years, A European tour in 1991, and the west coast (including the
Ashgrove in Santa Monica, The Strawberry Festival and The Great
American
Music Hall In San Francisco) last summer and fall.
Emmylou covered his song "Jeruselem Tommorrow" on her
cd prior to
Wrecking Ball.
Dave's version of deeper well can be heard on the cd of the same
title
on rounder. You will notice that the version is lacking a few
verses.
Those are the ones that Dan and Emmylou added to make the song
fit the
female perspective.
I am a lucky guy to know such a great songwriter. Last fall I was
IN
knashville between gigs, and went to a record release party with
dave
and his wife, and lo and behold....there was Ms. Harris. Needless
to
say I was mesmorized by her natural beauty and the calming vibe
that
surrounds her.
well, anyway, wanted to thank all involved with the newsletter,
if
anyone wants to know more about Olney, or what I do musically ( I
am
also a recording engineer/producer) feel free to write me
(DVSCLAUD@WORLDNET.ATT.NET) sEE YA.

I doubt it is very valuable at all, considering the
"breastful" version is
available in every other country other than the USA (including
where I am,
Canada).....
Does anyone have a copy of the "Sessions at ...." video
they'd like to trade
for? the US PBS station my local cable company carries wasn't
showing it. I
have a big video list. Not much DL, except for "Building the
Wrecking
Ball"... But lots of neat stuff, ZAPPA, Weather Report,
etc......
anyway, nice to be on the list and have a wonderful day!
Oh, and that studio in Oxnard, Cal. is owned by a former
"protege" of DL's.
It is featured in this month's issue of Canadian Musician
magazine.....

Subject: Re: Lanois sound canadian connection?
Hello Kenley, great list, but there again great artist!
I've taken some time to gather my thoughts on the Lanois
"sound",
but this was prompted by Matts comments on Sarah McLachlan in
ACADIE
86.
It is interesting to compare the Canadian heritage of some of
great guitar-sound men. There's Neil Young for one! and in Sarah
McLachlans case Pierre Marchand. If you really want a taste of
this
mans abilities get hold of "The Freedom Sessions" some
of the later
tracks are awe inspiring. (Now was Matt fishing?) Nonetheless,
both
the "Freedom Sessions" and "Surfacing" come
with a substantial
software package (The Future of CD's). Check out the video of
Sarah
and the band, I wonder when Emmylou or Daniel will venture into
this
Technology. As to "Surfacing" as a CD it simply uses
the same
money spinning formula as previously, a far cry from
"Solace", so
good luck to the Band I for one look forward to more from Pierre
Machand.
Another Canadian though very "Country" is John Prine
great writer try
"Lost Dogs and Mixed Blessings" Great sound, he even
credits the
Collings Guitar on this one.
Another great guitar-sound man, though I can't make a Canadian
connection here, is John Leventhal try Shawn Colvins " A Few
Small
Repairs" its a beauty.
Well that's enough for now. If anyone has any other suggestions,
personally will save Kenley. While we wait for Daniels next solo.

Subject: Daniel Lanois is Yoda!
I hope everyone caught the Sessions at West 54th on PBS (those of
you who
were in areas where it was broadcast). It was the first time I
had seen
Daniel Lanois in action, and I was completely inspired. I
understand more
fully now why his music is so inspirational, it is because he is
consumed by
it. I enjoyed hearing his interview about how he planned the show
and set
list. He said that Emmylou would warm the crowd up, but he would
need to
come out there and give them something which hits them between
the eyes. His
solo in "Deeper Well" did just that, it was one of the
best solo's I've ever
heard. I think only Jimi Hendrix and The Edge would be comparable
guitar
wizards as far as fusing technicality and spirituality.
Daniel Lanois is the "Yoda" of the music world. He
seems to live in a
'musical region' where not many people have heard of him, yet he
has trained
all of the top musicians from 1985 on. I mean absolutely NO
disrespect to
any of the musicians he's worked with (I LOVE them all), but it
as I was
watching the show, I was getting bored with Emmylou (probably
because I
really wanted to see Yoda) and when Daniel Lanois (Yoda) arrived
on the
scene, the concert took a 180 degree turn into the spiritual
realm and his
music was as powerful as any U2 or Peter Gabriel song I've ever
listened to.
I'm sure that all musicians who really know what good music is
would want
him to be a part of their musical career. From now on I will
refer to Daniel
Lanois as "Yoda" (not because I think he's an ugly
green guy ready to die!
He's the Jedi Master of the Rock world, and I'm not a Star Wars
nut either,
I just can't find a better way to describe him yet).

Hooked by tape-deck back up last night at long last (the problems
when
you start taking gear over to friend's places :-) and was digging
through the big jumble of cassettes when I ran across a DL
bootleg that
I've got. Since I've now got a source for info (this list), the
question is:
Anyone else got this? I'm looking for a track listing. I can pick
out
the songs from Acadie and FtBoW, but other stuff ??? The tape is
labelled as Amsterdam Paradiso, February 1, 1990.
At this point, I am _not_ offering copies, not because I don't
want to
but because the second side of my cassette deck is busted.
Whenever I
get around to getting it fixed, I will be more than willing to
make
copies for whoever wants them.

Well, I am finally getting to see the broadcast of Sessions at W.
54th
with Emmylou and Daniel Lanois, which was rebroadcast tonight in
Indianapolis
by the Butler University station. Sadly, my father appears to
have hit
the 'record' button late, and I don't know what I may have
missed. Could
someone do me a favor and send a complete listing of the songs
performed?

Okay, by another strange concidence, this week I found the Chris
Whitley
single "Weightless" with the Lanois remix... Like
Emmylou's "Goodbye", I
think I like the album version better, maybe just because I'm
used to it
being quieter and the vocals being more isolated... Chris has
recently
split with Sony/Work but is hoping to record a new album very
soon in New
Orleans... Maybe we'll see some original collaboration between
them - none
of this 'remix' stuff... :)
Thanks very very much to everyone who offered to tape the
Sessions program
for me. I'll echo Line's remark that Lanois fans are the nicest
bunch :)
Turns out it _was_ broadcast here in Tucson - So I was able to be
absolutely floored with the live version of "Orange
Kay" with the rest of
you...
