I've been reading your pages for quite some time and this is a
great
discussion
group you have. My question for anyone out there is can you give
me some
personal info on Daniel. The only things that I've read time and
time again
is
that he was born in Quebec and move to the Toronto area, he has a
brother
and
obviously a mother and started his career in her home. That's
where it
ends.
So if there is anyone out there with a bit more detailed
information I
would greatly
appreicate the help. He is a fasinating and talented individual
and he
deserves
all our respect for the quality music he puts out.

Subject: DANEL LANOIS AND SPIRITUALITY, and how that affects
Peter Gabriel.
If I can jump into this Peter Gabriel discussion. I think we all
agree that
Daniel Lanois brings technical genius to each album he is
involved in. What
we also must recognize is the spiritual element he carries with
him. He
raises the level of an album from "hum drum" to
"spiritual" just by his mere
presence. The best example I can give to show what I mean is by
watching the
Sessions at West 54th show. Notice Emmylou, Johnson, and Blade
(not so much
Blade though) before they do "Deeper Well". There is a
lack of intensity, a
lack of confidence, and a lack of SPIRITUALITY. And then Yoda
comes out, and
it's like the Cosmic force of the universe drops in on the show!
There is a
very definite and noticeable difference, a spiritual difference.
He even
describes to us in the interview how he had planned to raise the
intensity
level by performing a solo in "Deeper Well" which would
do just that.
Let's talk about the word "SPIRITUAL". Let's get a
discussion of that word
going and how we all will define it differently. When I'm talking
about
spirituality, I'm talking about that "certain
something" that you can't quite
put your finger on. That "thing" that causes chills
down your spine, that
"thing" that opens your eyes and makes you pay
attention. That "thing" that
makes you say "DAMN, YODA KICKS ASS". It's that
"thing" that hits a part of
humanity that no one is quite able to define. That's what I call
spirituality. It may be religious, if you're religious. It may be
cosmic,
if you're into the Star Wars type of thing. It may be something
closer to
the rhythm of nature (which I am leaning toward). However you
want to name
it, it is there. There is something spiritual that a certain few
people have
carried with them in Rock and Roll history. Peter Gabriel had it
from the
beginning, just go watch Genesis with Gabriel and then Genesis
with Phil
Collins (Phil Collins DOES NOT have it)!!! John Lennon had it,
just listen
to Sgt. Peppers and notice the difference between Lennon's songs
and
McCartney's songs. Which would you rather listen to: "A Day
In the Life" or
"Lovely Rita"???? Paul McCartney definitely DOES NOT
HAVE IT!! And he calls
himself a Christian, too (not that that's bad, it just shows you
that
SPIRITUALITY and RELIGIOSITY are not always together). Jimi
Hendrix had it,
just listen to "If 6 were 9" or "All Along the
Watchtower". Bono from U2
(and the rest of them) has it, just watch them perform
"Exit" on the Rattle
and Hum video (U2 is an example showing how RELIGIOSITY and
SPIRITUALITY can
exist together).
WHO ELSE HAS IT???? Who else is spiritual in the sense that
everything they
touch turns into a spiritual orgasm? Maybe there's a case for
Dylan, maybe
Emmylou now that she's worked with Lanois (Yoda). How about this
one, maybe
"Puff Daddy"! There's something there too, but in a
different way. I can
list a long list of who doesn't have it. Do we want to get into
that,
though? I say that 99% of all musicians lack spirituality. Most
do not lack
talent, but most lack spirituality.
THAT'S WHY YOU ALL LIKE DANIEL LANOIS!!! THERE ARE PRODUCERS WHO
ARE JUST AS
GOOD TECHNICALLY, BUT NONE ARE AS GOOD SPIRITUALLY.

This just in from Island Records: Lanois' "Amazing
Grace," as well as
Ani DiFranco's superb version, will bookend a new release to come
out
Sept. 30. It's called "Amazing Grace," and it'll
include recordings by
Angelique Kidjo, Bob Marley, Melissa Etheridge, P.M. Dawn, Jane
Siberry
("Calling all Angels," a great song from her
mesmerizing album "When I
Was a Boy") The Automatic Baby (members of REM & U2,
singing "One"
live), & the Cranberries ("Dreaming My Dreams"
live).
It's a fund-raiser for the T.J. Martell Foundation, the Multiple
Myeloma
Fund at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and other
cancer
research centers.
The release doesn't call the Lanois cut a new or previously
unreleased
recording, as it does for others, so it's likely the one with
Aaron
Neville.
I'm sure Island has a web page with more track info.

Subject: Death of a train lyrics
Just found this websight. Love it. It is heartening to know that
there
are Lanoisphiles across the world.
I wasn't sure if Jack was wanting just the lyrics to death of a
train,
or if he was woundering what the meaning could be (as everyone
groans
"not another person with a long winded, metaphysical, drug
induced
attempt to find hidden meanings behind simple words")
But I think the meaning is quite clear, and the lyrics are as
poignant
as the music is beautiful.
Forgive my bias, but there are many references to Canadian places
and
people, and I think the message is to Canada.
The "train" Dan sings of is a metaphor for unity.
Indeed the railroad
brought Canada together as a nation, as it did for the U.S.A.
I Lanois laments the loss of this unity. It's spelled out in his
last
verse:
"Oh, Trudeau, where are you
My friend, too lead us through
These hard times
So much confusion
I don't hear your train no more"
Trudeau was arguably one of our greatest Prime Ministers. One of
his
dreams was that through a strong federal government, we would be
a
strong unified country.
Because of political and economical reasons, our Federal
government has
lost it's strength, and Trudeau has lost his dream, his train.
(Irony: We are selling off our national rail lines, as the train
doesn't
seem so important anymore. Psst.. Wanna buy a national rail line
cheap?)
But enough somber shit.
Keep up the great work, and I can only pray Dan gets around to
releasing his album in the next year (and Lord forbid, tour!!)
Cheers, Sean Gartner

Subject: In Oxnard, really?
Hi all, I love the newsletter Kenley. I lived most of my teenage
years
in Oxnard CA. and I still have family there. As a matter of fact,
I am
going down there at the end of October. Anyone know where
Daniel's
studio is? I swear I'm not a stalker. Just an appreciative fan.
It would
blow me away to meet the man. Or even to see the studio. I first
saw him
at the Louisiana Harvest Blues Festival and was awestruck by his
powerful performance. Specifically, "When the Hawkwind
Kills" touched me
deeply. I had heard of him through other artists, mostly in a
producer
role...Eno, U2, Bowie. I started my Lanois interest as a
teenager. I'm
32 now and the fascination has not faded one bit.
Dee
[According to the notes on the new Dylan CD, the address is:
Teatro Studios, 626 Oxnard Blvd., Oxnard, CA
I too have an interest in this area since I got married in Ojai,
which is
about 15 minutes from Oxnard. -- Kenley]

As far as I know - heard, that is - Lanois wasn't all that
thrilled about
working with the Nevilles back then so I wonder about the
possibility... of
course it would be good as since then the Nevilles really haven't
released
anything as perfect as the "Yellow Moon" album!
Maybe there already was a follow-up to this story which I missed:
please
don't be angry! Does anyone have any news on this item anyway?
Much love & Lanois,

Hi there.
I hate to do this, but...
Do you have (or know of someone who does or has or can
transcribe)
the tab (or just chords) to Dan Lanois's "stillwater"?
I saw him at Kumbaya '95 (a huuge get together of the best
Canadian
Artists, all the $$$ goes to fight aids...what a concert...but I
digress.)
Anyhoo, He did a live version of it with Sarah Mclachlan &
Junkhouse
that just blew me away.
I taped it off the T.V. (while I was at the concert),
but I couldn't quite make out all the lyrics, and I tried to pick
out
the chords from the video, but it just doesn't sound quite right.
I've already checked the Olga, so thanx in advance.

Subject: Lili
Head's up for a new Atlantic release on Tuesday from a newly
signed talent,
Lili Haydn (sp?). She writes, sings, and plays a most expressive
violin. I
had the pleasure of meeting her (friend of a friend) on a recent
visit here
to D.C. Yes, there is a Daniel tie-in. She has done session work
with him
in New Orleans, the most recent on a soundtrack for a film called
"Camilla".
(Never heard of it, nor any mention here. Help!) Daniel, as well
as
others, took a swing at producing Lili's CD, but Lili wound up
producing
herself, and most admirably I must say.
Describe it? Tough one. Wildly original, is my first reaction. I
heard
about half of it in the limited time of her visit, as well as a
few minutes
of live solo violin noodling about. Though not a Daniel product,
the effort
has an ethereal, cerebral aire to it that compels me to crave a
studious
listening.
Joe
still waiting to hear the Dylan album.

Thanks again for all your work on Lanois. Found Dylan's new album
pretty
uninteresting on any level. Only one listen so far. It may grow
on me. I
hear a more muted influence of Lanois on the overall sound. Am I
wrong?
Could be my ears or the way Dylan and or Lanois wanted it. I wish
Lanois
had given it a real signature, like Harris's wonderful last
album. It
would have given us all something worth listening to. Yours
Truly, John
