Now that I have changed ISP's, I have made some changes in the way
I will be putting together the Digest. Hopefully you will all receive this
issue without any problems; please let me know if anything unusual
happens. Other than that, all should be the same.

Also, you can now search the back issues of the Digests! It's available
on the web site -- here is the shortcut address:

Keep the words and thoughts flowing. Thanks for all your participation.

Folks-

Malcolm Burn is a name mentioned in the liner notes of Wrecking Ball. I am
not sure if it has been discussed in this group before but Malcolm has
produced at least 2 records that I know of and they have a lot of the
qualities of "Lanois" production.
I also believe Dan has made an "appearance" on the 2 records that I know
of.....The 1st Crash Vegas record that was mentioned in the last newsletter
(it is out of print in america as far as I know) and the Chris Whitley record
LIVING WITH THE LAW. The Chris Whitely record is recommended if you like
Dan's solo work and the Emmy Lou record....I think I remember hearing that
Chris lived in Dans New Orleans house for a while before his record was
made.....you folks would probably have discussed this already but if you are
looking for a lost Lanois record (though kudos to Mr. Burn) I'd seek Living
With The Law

Does anyone know more about Lanois relationship to Malcolm?.....I have the
sense that he works with Dan all the time in the studio. I'd also like to
know of any records produced by Malcolm because there is a thread of quality
between them similar to the Lanois produced stuff.

Thanks
Randy

Hey there lanois fans. I'm new to the list and Lanois essentially. I got
interested in him through the DAve Matthews Band. I'm sure you all know this
but Dave used to do a killer version of the Maker and they did a few
versions of Beauty of Wynona on this tour. If anybody wants to hear them
just ask. But anyway, I wanted to know how I could get some of the early
recordings with Brian Eno I've heard about. I'd also like to know why Acadie
is the only Lanois solo album I can get in stores in this area. Why not
FTBOW? And then one last thing, I may have read it already but is there a
FAQ somewhere. Thanks a bunch and I look forward to learning all I can about
our beloved master. THanks.

Nah...just kidding, sorry. Too much time on the net I 'spose.
Just picked up two discs at Walmart, pathetic eh? Well, music is
hard to come by on the North coast of Wisconsin. Anyway, I bought
the new Dylan and the new Steve Earle and I must say I was pleased
with both purchases. Dylan does grow on ya and the sound is
innundated with a bluesy trance feel. Hats off again to Mr. Lanois.
The new Steve Earle ranks right up there as well and even has guest
appearances by Del McCoury and his band (great bluegrass) and the
extraordinary Miss Emmylou Harris. Buy it. Try it. You'll like it.
Well gotta get back to the cabin and stoke the fire.
Its winter here ya know. ELI

Subject: Charlie Rose and Dylan

I caught the tail end of Lanois on the Charlie Rose show on PBS. It was
about the Dylan album. It was pretty funny watching the other guests on the
show try to sound intelligent about Dylan's album and not know what they were
talking about. I know how they feel!!!! Lanois spent a lot of the time
correcting their criticisms. Anyone get it on tape?? I'd love a copy, give
me an e-mail.

Here's my observation about Lanois. He's too damn nice to be that good!!! I
think he's very different behind the scenes. He has to be!! I read about
how during the Achtung Baby album, Bono and Lanois got into a huge yelling
match, and everyone who was there was sure they'd get into a fist fight.
That's not a situation that happened from Lanois being Mr. nice guy and
always asking everyone if it is OK if he does stuff. I'm impressed with his
ability to come across as such a nice guy. I'd love to work with him and
find out what really goes on. If he's so nice, why are his albums so dark??
His lyrics are not nice!! His guitar solos aren't nice!! His productions
aren't nice!! He's been accused of being a sort of producer/tyrant. That's
not nice!!! Hey, I just want a little honesty. I'd love it if he just spoke
his mind like he wants to!! Just be the person inside there. Yeah, you can
be nice, but all the time??? Just a thought!! I love the guy's music, I'm
just trying to get a good conversation going!! All I'm saying is watch the
PBS special. Lanois asks the interviewer if he should put a French song on
his new album. Mr. nice guy shines through. Then he says to the band while
he's playing "I'll call members of the band up as I feel necessary". That's
not Mr. Nice Guy!!!! That's the real Lanois. He's in control, and he knows
what is good, and he knows that not very many people do know what's good.

I've gotten through about 10 listens to the new Dylan album. It's brilliant,
exciting, a masterpiece, and very DRY at the same time. I love it, but I
can't stand it. I think I need a few years under my belt to understand it.
Lanois production is "cutting-edge" and the new sounds and effects are
magnificent. But Dylan is dry, monotonous, and his songs go on forever. But
you don't want them to end! Hmmm.... I love it. It's great, but you MUST
listen to it on the headphones or you haven't heard it yet. The things I
don't like about it all are a product of Dylan, but I'm going to give it 10
more listens and let you know what I think later. I notice pretty much the
same reactions from you all, some love it, some don't, some want to love it
but can't, and that's where I fall in.

I'm still going to stick to my recommendation of U2's "Pop" as being the best
realease of 1997.

Matt

In the Lanois family,
there was Daniel,
Sister Jocelyne, who was in Crash Vegas and does lots of fantastic soundtrack work... on her own..
She had been in Martha & The Muffins ( Echo Beach was their big song..) ( Michael Brook was also on
that project, he now produces Nuzrat, a bunch of stuff on 4AD, film soundtrack, Albino Aligator..
Mary Margaret Ohara ...)
two other brothers, Ron abd Bob,

I think it was Bob that directed the making of the Wrecking Ball video.

The mother,
(I can't remem ber ber name) was a single parent... in Hamilton, Ontario..
(With Four Kids!!!!!)

Also someone mentioned Ron Sexsmith (who is very amazing.)

Daniel Lanois took the album photo on his cover of the first record. Dan also produced one of the
songs or maybe 2 .

Hello all,

I find that there is a "Spiritual" edge within Lanois' music as it
seems many other people do. For me though, the sound is what makes
everything, as well as the lyrics. The sound is so bare, so right to
the root that I can't help but feel the music within the corresponding
spot in myself. The emotions I feel when I listen to Lanois are almost
always contradicting, but I inevitably leave the listening feeling more
solid, realistic, and understandnig of life. I have found some people
get the sound, and others can't get beyond it. I don't knwo quite what
to say. I find Acadie is encouraging and supporting and almost
religious due to the maker and amazing grace. Just a very raw and
strong sound. Personally though, I really enjoy For the Beauty of..
because there don't seem to be any definite answers, no ideologies or so
forth. Simply impressions of life, love and going through this damnable
thing called mortality. I hope he sings more in French on the new
record.

I wanted to know if anyone here listens to Michael Brook?? He is
also a Canadian artist who I feel does amazing work. Michael Brook did
a great album with Brian Eno and Daniel called "Hybrid" which I STRONGLY
recomend to anyone who likes anything by these three. Wow, what an
album. Also, Brook's work with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is also wonderful.
So, if you are looking for similar stuff check Michael Brook out. Those
Canadian artists you know..

Lastly, I am writing to someone on this group from Montreal named
Line. I lost your address line and I was wondering if you could write
me. I ended up taking your advice on going to Nova Scotia and visited
Cheticamp. If you could, send me a mail and I can tell you all about my
travels. I promise to work on my French writing!

Thanks everyone. Take care.

Yo, y'all

I've been reading Acadie for 5-6 months now but never had a post until
now.

In reply to the gentleman who wondered what poem DL was reciting on
the first disc...that's just his own lyrics which he chose in that instance
to speak rather than to sing... [I lay awake, on this broken bed....Every
sailor asks the question, about the cargo he is carrying]. By the way, he
was writing about a slave ship, and the cargo was, yes, slaves.

And for Ian McC, to whom I have written directly, on DL's sister...her
name is Jocelyn, and she also appeared on the very fine disc by M+M (after
they had dumped their previous name, Martha and the Muffins) entitled
'Danseparc'. Right there I knew she was great, because there are some
splendid basslines on that record, particularly the title song.

While I'm here, I would like to propose some swappage. I missed the
PBS Detroit airing of Sessions at W. 54th, if that is what it is called.
I'd sure like to get it for my permanent collection.

Things I have which I'd swap:

"Acadie" from 1990, a show in Toronto's Diamond Club (Phoenix Concert
Theatre)
Great show with superb atmosphere/playing, many candles to set the
mood.

Concert For Mandela This was before NM was released, I think. About
April/May 1990. DL was the musical director of the
band, and he did some of his own stuff.

Rocky World You know what this is, I'm sure.

Tonight Show DL came on the Leno show after Winona came out and played one
song...I've never seen him blaze on guitar like that before,
he positively approached a Neil Youngian sound. With a
3-piece
including that young drummer from New Orleans. I do not
recall
his name, but I'm sure someone here does. That guy kicks ass!

I have been trading tapes with people for a few years now. Anyone
with doubts on my reliability can ask for some names of my previously
satisfied customers to contact.

I have 2 Hi-Fi Stereo VCR's...a Mitsubishi and a Hitachi.

Takers?

Seeya, Matt Stevenson

I've been a subscriber for many months now and eagerly await this newsletter
every week. It's such a joy to connect with other fans - I can't count the
number of people I introduced to DL's talents since I discovered him as a
singer when Acadie was released. My dilemma is that I have never been in the
right city at the right time to see him and I can't wait any longer. He's the
last of the "people I have to meet" to meet or at least see perform. Does
anyone know what he'll be up to in the coming months? I can easily trek to
Toronto or New Orleans to stay with friends, but I'm willing to go anywhere
anytime. I don't suppose he ever hangs out in Atlanta. If anyone has any ifo I
will be eternally obliged. Thanks.

Dear all,

Firstly let me say how much I enjoy reading the list. It is rare to
find an internet resource free of spam or junk of some kind.
Unadulterated Lanois is what you get here and that makes my day.

My observations about Time Out of Mind are as follows:

1. Lanois has not "tweaked" this as much as Oh Mercy and I think the
album is probably better for it. Instead I think Dan and Bob have
spent time finding a groove and this is evident from tracks like Cold
Irons Bound and Trying to get to Heaven.

2. The best song for me is Not Dark Yet. The lyrics are so good and I
love the way Dylan sings some of the words e.g "and I've been to
gaaaay Pareeeee". This is just cracks me up and makes me feel really
sad all at the same time.

3. Some people on the Dylan list have criticized Highlands for being
overlong/directionless but I would beg to differ. The song is pretty
funny and can stand the length. Also at the end we wind up better off
for understanding Bob's state of mind through his mind bending
conversation with the waitress.

On another note: I was re-listening Acadie the other day (mainly for
The Maker which is stunning - Neville is so impressive on this song,
and I don't much like Yellow Moon either) and got to wondering which
label Dan is signed to personally now. I have a feeling he may not be
on Warners (Opal) any more. I wrote to Anthea Norman Taylor and got
not reply. Also on Bob's and Luscious Jackson's albums there is no "DL
appears courtesy of Warner Bros " etc. Has anyone got any info on
this?

Andy

hi kenley,

in the event no one has forwarded this to you yet...joe jackson is not

the 'daniel lanois sound'. btw...imagine catching a glimpse of the part
where dan talks about he and bob out in the car park playing acoustics
working out arrangements!

Dear Kenley,

Thank you very much for your hard work and time spent maintaining your very interesting news letter.
Gwen and I have been reading it for quite a while now. I'm an audio engineer and drummer based in Boston, and recently I had the great pleasure of working with Brian Blade. He truly is a very rare and special musical talent that only comes along once in a while. While talking with him, he informed me that he had just completed a new album as bandleader. Although the title had not been fully determined, It may be released as "The Brian Blade Fellowship" or perhaps simply "The Fellowship". It will be on BLUE NOTE.
Apparently DL had his hands in it, although to what degree, I'm not sure.
Just think, Dan working on a Blue Note release...humm... its bound to be great and I certainly am looking forward to it!! I encourage the rest of
our family to keep an eye out for it. I don't think the release date has
been determined, at least as of 10/18/97.

Dan's the man. Tubes rule. Bob's album keeps growing...And the music - keep it flowing.

Peace.
John
