Subject: Thank You for the Lanois Interview!
I want to make a public THANK YOU to Michael for posting that
long interview
with Daniel Lanois about the Dylan album in ACADIE Digest, Number
92.
I had written my opinion about the Dylan album in the same
Digest, and I
realize that I am far from being able to understand the depth of
that album.
Mr. Lanois has pointed out some brilliant insights into what
music is
lacking and what music should be doing. I value his comments
deeply, being a
musician who is aspiring to capture the essence of Spirit in
music. I
realize even more now that I have a long way to go.
Anyone who didn't get a chance to read the interview needs to go
back and
read Digest Number 92 and then listen to "Time Out of
Mind" again, it will
change the way you hear it. I don't back down from my critique,
but I also
am noting that I am giving a very immature critique. Give me 30
years of
experience to catch up with Dylan and then we'll see how I
critique his
music!!
This is a great newsletter, and it has gotten better in the last
6 months,
let's keep it up!!

O.K. - This has gone far enough...
Remember me? I'm still looking for the Cool Water Video. I have
given up
hope for the last month, and am now back on it. At this point, I
don't
care if it won't quench that thirst for great entertainment
(which it very
well could), I just need to see it. It's like a hunt; however,
this hunt
has left me with nothing.
What I seek is video of Daniel working in the studio. If this
video
doesn't have that element in it, I may give up my hunt.
In the liner notes in Luscious Jackson's CD, there is a thank you
to Bob
Lanois for capturing the recording sessions on videotape. If
anyone knows
about this video, please let me know!!! (I'm sure it would be a
boot)
Speaking of Luscious, here is a result I found on a search
(interview)...
It's pretty fun reading:
http://www.grandroyal.com/Bands/LusciousJackson/press/Swill.html
(Also, on a side note, GO SEE GATTICA. This movie rocks.
Although, it
would be PERFECT with a Lanois Soundtrack.)
If you got's the video, let me know! THANKS! alhouser@lilly.com

When I met Malcolm he was working with Dan on Wynona, and at the
same time
upstairs Lisa Germano was recording her "Happiness" cd,
which is also
produced by Malcolm and features among others Malcolm Burn, Bill
Dillon,
Ronald Jones and Daryl Johnson... these names just *might* sound
familiar... ;) The music is typical 4AD (the record label) to me,
as it
isn't very "accessible" as I call it: you have to like
that kind of stuff
(which I do). But it might be a nice one for those interested in
the
linked-to-Dan things.
Greetz,
Marja

To answer Randy's request for info on Malcolm Burn:
I have thirteen CDs that Malcolm Burn produced, including Chris
Whitley's and
Crash Vegas'. Here are the other eleven:
1. Malcolm Burn - Redemption
Solo CD from 1988, available only in Canada, out of print. DL
mixed the
first
track.
2. Pregnant - After Dinner Mints
Pregnant is a band led by Malcolm. This CD came out a year ago.
Again,
only available in Canada as it's indie.
3. Neville Brothers - Brother's Keeper - 1990
Follow up to Yellow Moon, and another great record. DL plays
guitar on
the song 'Fearless'.
4. Charlie Sexton Sextet - Under the Wishing Tree - 1995
Co-produced with Charlie Sexton.
5. Junkhouse - Strays - 1993
6. Junkhouse - Birthday Boy - 1995
Junkhouse are from Hamilton Ontario, as are DL and Malcolm.
7. John Mellencamp - Human Wheels - 1993
Co-produced with John Mellencamp, David Leonard, and Michael
Wanchic.
8. Blue Rodeo - Diamond Mine - 1988
9. Midnight Oil - Breathe - 1996
10. Iggy Pop - American Caeser - 1993
11. Giant Sand - Glum - 1994
Also, Malcolm was in a band called Boys Brigade in the early 80's
who put out
a record in 1983 that was produced by Geddy Lee of Rush! I've got
it on
cassette.
I recommend the 3rd, 4th, and 5th CDs listed to anyone who is a
fan of DL's
production work.
Malcolm has also produced CDs for Patti Smith and Lisa Germano,
but I don't
have them yet.
As you may have guessed, I am a big fan of Malcolm's production
work. I agree
that Malcolm's production sound is very much like DL's. I have
been lucky
enough to have met DL twice, and the second time I met him I told
him that I
was a fan of Malcolm's, and that he had taught him well. He
seemed to enjoy
that. If anyone could add to this list, I'd love to hear from
you! Or any
other info on Malcolm! (Please e-mail me directly).
Lisa

And you'd be right! Malcolm and Daniel have been working together
for over
ten years...

Other Malcolm Burn projects I know offrom a quick glance
through my CDs:
He engineered several tracks on "Storyville", Robbie
Robertson (1991);
co-produced "Human Wheels", John Mellencamp (1993);
produced "Breathe",
Midnight Oil (1996) [very much an underrated album]; and produced
"Looking
For Butterboy", Archie Roach (1997)
That's all the info I have, but I'm sure there's a lot more stuff
of
Malcolm's out there.

To Randy, regarding Malcolm Burn:
Check out a record by Texas artist Charlie Sexton, called
Under The Wishing Tree. Produced by Burn. Very Lanoisesque.
Cool stuff!

Hi. I am new to this list and am not quite sure where to send
things to be
posted in the newsletter, so I apologize if this is the wrong
address.
Please forward it to the correct one. My messege follows:
Hey group...I am new to this list, but have found it very
interesting so far
and look forward to getting it. This is a tremendous project
Kenley has
undertaken, and I have been nothing but impressed with all of it!
Now, down to business. I am currently attempting the long-shot of
getting
some sort of internship/foot-in-the-door in Lanois' next project
(a solo
record, I think). I have sent letters to his management co. (3rd
Rail) as
well Teatro Studios and Opal Info. I have a contact who may know
some
people at the management co. and could make a few phone calls
that would
help me out. He suggested I find out WHO ELSE 3rd Rail
represents, as he
probaly knows people associated with them. However, I haven't
been able to
find a TRACE of them online anywhere, and have no other avenues
to look for
other artists on 3rd Rail. I wondering of anyone has any
ideas/names for me
in this direction. If you know of any, please send me email
privately. Any
help would be appreciated. Thanks...Brian (BHeller@iname.com)

Hi,
I was in Oxnard and found the old theare that D.L. has been using
to
record in. It is a deserted, boarded up brick building that used
to be
an old time movie theatre. Right in the middle of Oxnard.
Amyway, I had fun checking out the exterior and talking with the
business next door about the "very different people who come
and don't
speak English or Spanish". I described D.L. to him and he
said that when
he comes there are "a lot of people on motorcycles sometimes
and a very
different looking woman." Apparently, D.L. picks up his mail
periodically from Elias, the man I spoke with. I told Elias to
call me
if D.L. showed up while I was in Oxnard, but alas, to no
avail.....
Great fantasy, though!
