Subject: daniel lanois/events, ie. music.
I've been reading for about 6 mos. now and I felt stongly about
letting
everyone know that I find this collective a breath of fresh air.
I am very
grateful and so, I would like thank Kenley for his devotion and
consistency.
Also, a thank you to all fellow music lovers who I deeply enjoy
learning
from. Last but not least...Daniel, mon amie, si tu est la, mercie
infiniement pour l'inspiration.
I remember the first time I heard 'With or Without You' by U2 in
the
eighties around the time of the stock market crash. There was a
transcending element behind the sound that I couldn't describe
but much
later on perceived to be Lanois. Catching Dan's live set in the
Toronto
area at the first Roadside Attraction, in a field, my vision of
music and
its' relation to life and people changed. I've never gone back,
and I know
that you don't have to hear Dan live to experience this. It was
no suprise
to me when I read 'five stars' on the Rolling Stone review of
'For the
Beauty of Wynona.' Oddly enough I am suprised that I hadn't seen
anyone on
this site mention that there's a very small town/suburb just
outside of
Hamilton called Winona, Ontario. This is the first thing that
struck me...I
have an impulse to visit Winona, and if I do I will let everyone
know what
happened, especially if I find 'the beauty' Dan is talking about.
The 'Grandfather-like' achievement of the pioneer ambient days
with Eno (who
published a rather interesting book of his daily journal which I
esteem
highly, look for it!) is, I'd like to say, the most admirable
integrity of
roots I've perceived in a musician so far.
A close friend of mine knows a past editor for a nationwide
canadian music
magazine who has interviewed Dan and still keeps in touch with he
and his
wife. He has been known to say that he admires dedication, some
talent,
hard work, and passion in muscians that he encounters. Regardless
of how
much publicity and media they might have, these principles are
the most
important criteria he uses in choosing to work with an artist.
What if all
producers and labels lived by these principles? Just some info
for the
dreamers out who I feel so close to!
Hamilton is approx. 45 mins. away from Welland where I live so
you can see
how I would enjoy this opportunity to share my love for Dan's
music through
this amazing collective. Also, my deepest shout out to all
readers with a
love for anti-entertainement music....You are changing the world
every
second of the day. Thanks for reading, but keep reading! I am
compiling a
list for a book of avant-garde, musicians from all over the
planet,
particularly ones with very evolved sound, that do not sound like
anyone
else, that are pioneers, that are not very well known and you
would like to
share with others. Your reply is welcome. Please include a
statement of the
reasons why you esteem the artist(s) along with some discography
if possible.

Hmmm...mebbe my memory is evaporating, but I don't remember
people being
bothered by that. Oh, well. In either case, it's the combination
of light
and dark in his music and other music that interests me. To me,
my boredom
frequently kicks in when music or art in general lives in all
dark or all
light. I prefer the conflict and balance between the two.
> There his nothing wrong with that, actually, I think that's

And acknowledging your dark side ("Luuuuke, don't give in to
the Dark Side!")
as well as well as your "spiritual" side is crucial,
and not everyone
possesses this kind of awareness.
Sorry, this time, no special DL insights. I'm surprised that
there is not a
little bit more chatter about the new Dylan disc, though.

Hello! I am looking for a VHS copy of "the Making of
Wrecking Ball", and
"Sessions on West 54th." If can offer up audio tape
trades, although I do not
have many Lanois shows on tape.
Thanks!

Any out there in Acadie here anything about a Lanois appearance
at
the JazzFest 98? It has been a few years, perhaps it is time.

Hello, this is my first post, though I've been lurking. One of
the things I really enjoy about Acadie is the shifting back and
forth between french and English. I took French in High School,
and enjoy hearing the beautiful language. I also like kate and
Anna McGarrigle's CD which I think is called the French Record.
What I'm wondering is, does anyone have recommendations for other
music sung in French that I could get a hold of. I like updated
or modern folk, wavering over towards easy listening if
necessary. Would be happy to hear from anyone with recs.
Thanks, Tim Wiles

Subject: "Building the Wrecking Ball" panel discussion
Fellow Lanoisphiles,
First I'd like to thank Doug for informing us about the panel
discussion
on "Building the Wrecking Ball" in Nashville. I went
and it was amazing!
Seeing the film on the big screen was incredible. The panel
itself was
great. Emmylou came and talked about how this project really came
about
because Electra records turned down doing a video (but she
stressed
repeatedly how something good can come out of something bad). Bob
Lanois
was truly interesting and provided some info. which I think this
group
will be very interested in. First, Bob was filming during the
Dylan
sessions and said a film/video might be in the making. Second,
Bob is
currently present filming Daniel's recording session for the next
solo
album and said that it is very likely that Dan will release a
video with
the CD!!! Needless to say I am personally very excited. But, all
the
panel stated that "Building the Wrecking Ball" will not
be released on
video form :(. Since I've finally seen it, I don't feel quite as
bad.
Anyways, the following are little tidbits from Emmylou: the dog
in the
film is hers, Bonaparte; the day they shot the video segment for
"All my
tears" was absolutely freezing and Emmylou nearly froze; in
fact, she was
so cold that she could barely zip up her pants after the shoot
(she felt
that since we had all seen the film, she knew us personally and
therefore
could tell us this). They all talked about how amazing Neil Young
was--just so relaxed flying in in the evening, recording, and not
caring
about the video. Also, the whole idea of doing this video to show
the
public was Lisa Robertson's--she was present throughout all the
sessions
smoking cigarettes and taking notes. Thanks again to Doug for
letting us
know about this. Cheers, Joanne
