Hello there!

Any of you figured out how to play some of Lanois' songs?

I know Daniel's work goes deeper than just aligning chords, but once you got chords you figure out the scale, nor you figure out the scale and then chords.

All I want to know is: Anyone interested about this topic? I could post what I've came up with, will you do the same?

I'm definitly interested in this topic, but i'm not that great at working songs out. I've been messing about with Fire recently, but it's hard to keep it interesting on just one guitar. Ok I've been playing a lot of guitar these past few days and I've managed to work out versions of Still Water, Ice and (Yay) San Juan. If anyone wants me to tab these out and post them here I will.

Would love to see it. I know he uses a very strange tuning (big surprise) on San Juan... like an open C or something. I once worked it out, but have since forgot. I'd love to see versions of shine and Power of One. He uses these transitional chords, especially on Shine that are tricky...

I'd love to be able to play those too, even Dan himself says Shine is a struggle to pull off by himself, still I'll give it a go at some point. As regards Power of One (Rockets version) I've figured out the basic melody line of the chorus, but not much else. But here it is to get you started:

That's interesting what you say about the tuning for San Juan, I've been playing it in open G and have found that it needs more open strings. I can still post my version if you want it.  Meanwhile here are the chords for Ice and Space Kay. (I could do a tab for Space Kay, if required)

Ice:
Verse: Em, Bm (sounds best played with Am shape barre chords)
Chorus: C, D, G (also barre chords where C & D are A shape and G is E shape)

Space Kay

Main Progression

B, Am, B, Am, G, G*, F, G, G*, F, Em

G*: Not really a chord change but the melody requires  playing b,c,b on the G string during the g chord.

Play all chords as E shape Barres except Em. Use lots of delay and pick out the melody from the chords. If playing solo it sounds good if you play a constant chugging baseline with the roots.
Thats it for now, but if anyone wants anything else I'll give it a shot. I've worked out a nice version of Slow Giving btw.

Well that's the intro right up until the singing comes in, the rest of the song is mostly variations on the above, I don't think Dan plays any line the same twice on the record, so I just tend to improvise.

I decided to give Dan's open F tuning (FFCFAC) a try and came up with a better version of The Unbreakable Chain, based on the Cool Water version. The chords I suggested earlier were horribly wrong.

Same pattern all the way through but with lots of improv/variations.
The bass line is really just a guide, play it in whatever rhythm sounds best.
Also the chords I wrote for Ice are slightly too high. All chords should be lowered half a step for the original key.
