Hi everyone, I'm glad I found this site, I love the layout and info and network....
This posting has nothing to do with Dan's music, so if this is not of interest to you, then please skip this read.
My friend and I have been following Daniel's music for a few years now, attending a few of his concerts, as well as meeting him a couple times. My friend adores both him and his music.
My question is: (this is mostly addressed to women out there who have met and befriended Dan, or guys who might have an informed opinion) when it comes to relating to women, is Daniel a sincere person or is he, inspite of his talent, a player? My friend thinks he's cute, but I am not so sure that he is sincere, as he seems to always be single, and interested in meeting new women. It seems kind of suspicious to me. We have both heard some stories and rumours about him being a player, and (to put it lightly) having a bad track record when it comes to the romance department.
Does anyone have an opinion about it, please share. Don't be shy...
Julia

PS**** I just wanted to add, the above posting wasn't meant as a slam to Dan's personal character. I just know my friend, and she is a wonderful person, and I am just trying to look out for her... Maybe the negative stories and rumours are not true, just trying to gather info... thanks;)

I don't think anyone knows much about this... I don't like to delve into the personal lives of people like Daniel Lanois, because he seems to be very private. At a show a few years ago, I think at the Roxy, he mentioned something about his girlfriend and learning a new language... I'm not sure what he meant, but I think she was french, and she was trying to teach him "french" french as opposed to canadian french.
Another anecdote:
My girlfriend and I were waiting in line for the Lanois/Tortoise show in LA, and he happened to walk by. He does this quite often, doesn't seem shy about being seen before a gig. Not many people recognize him, but my girlfriend certainly did, and I think she started to shake and jump up and down... this didn't scare him away, in fact, he came right over to us and said hello and gave her a huge hug. He was incredibly unassuming, and very friendly. I do think that he found my gf attractive, and was probably charmed by her enthusiasm.
He asked us what we were up to after the show, and told us to stick around because they were having a little party. He said he would find us inside. I thought that he would probably (understandably) forget. But as soon as we got in the doors, he came out with wristbands. gf had gone to get a poster, and he asked me, "where did she go!?" He actually waited for her to come back and gave her the wristbands and said, "have fun" or something like that.
We went to the party, met Daniel and the band, and had a good time. He didn't hit on her or anything like that, but I do think that he probably thought, "oh, she's cute" and thought it would be nice to meet her.
Anyway, that was my only personal encounter with Daniel as far as whether or not he is a player. He seemed to be with a tall, pretty brunette at the party, and didn't really leave her side.
A side note- in a recording of a recent show, I heard him mention that his son was in the audience. I've been a big Lanois fan for a few years now, and had NO idea that he had a son.
Enough for now.

Well, I'm a dude but if he isn't a sincere person on all fronts my entire intuition of humans is whacked.
I met him a few times and he was beyond nice to me and my buddy. I have met other "rock stars".. some were jerks for sure, some were nice,, Lanois was beyond nice. I'd go so far as to say he was disarmingly nice.
I've told this story a few times to some of you via email but this was my first meet with him, also the first show of his I ever saw.. It was after a show at The Ark in Ann Arbor, Mi in 2003. We hung around after the show because... well because I heard he always came out at chit chatted with folks,, and he did. Eventually he came around to us and I told him I was sad that my wife didn't get to come and see the show and I said to him, "I would take her to the Chicago show (in two days) but it's sold out", so he calls Adam Samuels over and goes "Adam, can we get these guys into the Chicago show?" and Adam looks in a little book and goes "yeah", and Dan goes, "set them up" and then he looks at me and goes "Adam will take care of you and we'll get you in at Chicago"... so then we had to drive to Chicago without knowing for sure if he was blowing us off or what,, but we walked in and had tickets waiting for us and sat next to Adam and Jennifer T for the whole show at the table next to the sound board.
Anyway,, that just blew me away that he did that. I wasn't asking for tickets, the thought never really crossed my mind, I was just bummed that my wife did not get to see him. To this day I do not know why he gave us free tickets to a show? I guess it just adds to my opinion that he is just truly a very nice man. I told my buddy on the way home that I almost hope he nevers gets the accolades he so derseves because it might ruin who he is and is interaction with the fans.
We met him and Brian Blade, Jennifer Tipalow (spelling?) and Adam Samuels after the show in Chicago and he was again, very nice. I asked him how he had his Firebird tuned because it sure wasn't standard or any of the open or dropped tunings I was familar with and he wrote it down for me..
Also,, I may be very incorrect but I was always under the assumption that Jennifer was his girlfriend?
It's hard to hold down a relationship when your famous. You never know who is being sincere or who just wants to bag a star. It's a rough life and from what little I know of him, he seems to handle it better than most.

Off topic I know, but you wouldn't happen to remember that tuning would you?

Well, yes and no...lol
It was weird and still made no sense to me,, but I did not research it either. That is, I never went through and tuned one of my guitars to that tuning.
I've seen it posted on this site somewhere, maybe even by me at one time.. but the two low strings were both tuned to F. something like FFCFAC..If that's not it hopefully it will spark someone elses memory. If I find the sheet he wrote it on for me I'll post it for sure...
