Belladonna is getting poor reviews over here in Sweden. I haven't heard it yet, but reviewers seem to think that it's dull and boring. No suggestive atmospheric musical landscapes, but merely some loose playing around with the pedal steel. I hope they're wrong, though I would've liked a few vocal tracks on it as well.

Yeah, the reviews I read were in daily newspapers, and I guess they simply can't take the time it needs to fully appreciate this kind of music. Incidentally, Daniel's old collaborator Brian Eno also has a new album out - with vocals!

This album immediately struck me -- and with repeat listens, it just keeps seeping deeper and deeper into my psyche.
This is really an amazing record. Sure, it isn't something that immediately grabs you by the throat, but that's not the idea. The best records are always the ones that grow on you!
There are some brillinat pieces on this album, and I had the pleasure last night of seeing Dan at the Vancouver Jazz Festival where he performed quite a few of the numbers from the new album (along with rarities like "Sweet Soul Honey," "Pour Ton Sourir," "Where Will I Be," and some new tracks).

i found it frustating. as i believe hes capable of something far far better than this. but just when you think its going to develop into something interesting he instead does something weird, with a new sound, which is annoying because instrumental music is in a way a conversation, or perhaps a speech, and to make it worth listening to it needs to be interesting, not weird. however weird is far better than boring, and theres far too much of that about.

ok. ill talk to myself then.
music being a product of the brain is obviously a reflection of someones thoughts and feelings.
the trouble is we like music either because its by someone like us and it strikes some familiar emotional chord, which, for example, can be the only possible reason anyone could like coldplay, that they like someone telling them how miserable they feel. and is the reason why anyone not wrapped up in feelings of self pity find coldplay unlistenable.
or we like it because its such a work of genius that its hard not to like. but for this we need structure, coherence and melodic development. which is evident fleetingly, in daniels work, for example, in matador. and its his flashes of genius that annoy me so much, because you can see them, and then they disappear.
to produce works of genius someone has to distance themselves from their own feelings, and not be imprisoned by them. and thats a very hard thing to do.
and i just find it really frustating that someone obviously so clever messes around in what is basically a place where music is just a form of self indlugent self pitying, driven fundamentally by a desire for status rather than any wish to produce a product of great value. when he so easily could have been doing something better.
im only really here just to kidnap him and take him to a far better musical world.
